Sixty-two years of Napier houses
Napier housing stock tells a story you can read through its plumbing. There is the post-1931 rebuild, with galvanised pipe and glazed clay drains that are now well past their design life. There are the 1960s and 70s state and private subdivisions through Tamatea, Pirimai and Maraenui, where the cylinders are on their second or third replacement. Then there is everything built since, on the flats and up the hill.
We have worked on all of it, in many cases more than once. When we say we know what is behind the wall of a Marewa bungalow, it is because we have had it open before.
What Napier rings us about
- Hot water cylinders, the single most common call we take
- Drains that block every winter, usually roots in an old clay line
- Leaking taps, toilets and the pipework in older bathrooms
- Gasfitting, including natural gas where it is available in the street
- Spouting that overflows in the first heavy rain after a dry spell
- Fires and wood burners, booked in autumn if people have any sense
Salt air and the flats
Living close to the sea is hard on fittings. Anywhere from Westshore round through Ahuriri and along Marine Parade, external tapware, spouting brackets and gas appliance housings corrode faster than they do inland, and it is worth spending a little more on the fitting the first time.
Much of Napier is also flat and low, which means falls on drainage are shallow and unforgiving. A drain laid with barely enough fall works for years and then does not. That is worth knowing before you agree to the cheapest quote on a drainage job.

Common questions
How quickly can you get to a Napier job?
The workshop is on Cadbury Road in Onekawa, so most of Napier is ten minutes away. Ring early in the day and there is a decent chance of a same day visit, and you will get a straight answer about it on the first call.
Do you cover Bay View and Westshore?
Yes, along with Ahuriri, Marewa, Onekawa, Tamatea, Pirimai, Napier South, Greenmeadows, Maraenui and Te Awa.
My house is from the 1930s rebuild. Is the plumbing a problem?
Not automatically, but houses of that era often still have original galvanised pipe and clay drainage. Both have a lifespan, and both give plenty of warning: falling pressure, rusty water in the morning, drains that block every winter.
