The part people forget: the consent
Installing a solid fuel fire in New Zealand needs a building consent, and there are rules about what can go in where, particularly on smaller urban sections. It is not difficult, but it is paperwork, and it takes time that people rarely allow for when they decide in May that they would like a fire by June.
We handle the consent side. You choose the fire, we deal with the process and the installation, and the job ends with an appliance that is signed off rather than one you have to explain when you sell the house.
Wood burners
Nothing else heats an open plan Hawke's Bay living room quite like a good wood burner, and it keeps working when the power does not. The trade-offs are honest ones: you need somewhere dry to store wood, someone has to carry it, and the fire needs a clean flue and an annual sweep to run properly.
Gas fires
A gas fire is instant heat with a switch or a remote, no wood, no ash, and no waiting for it to come up to temperature. It suits houses that already have gas, and it suits people who want heat in the lounge for two hours in the evening rather than a fire going all day. As licensed gasfitters we do the appliance, the gas run and the flue as one job.
Replacing an old fire
If there is already a fire in the wall, a replacement is usually more straightforward: the hearth, the clearances and the flue penetration are mostly there. The new appliance still has to meet the current standards, and it still needs consent, but you are not starting from a blank wall.
Book it before the cold
Fire enquiries all arrive in the same six weeks. If you know you want one for next winter, ring us in summer or early autumn. The install is easier to schedule, the consent has time to come through, and you are not on a waiting list behind everyone else who left it until the first frost.

Do I need a council consent for a wood burner?

Wood burner or gas fire?
A wood burner gives you serious heat and works in a power cut, at the cost of storing and carrying wood, and a consent. A gas fire is instant, controllable and clean, and suits a house that already has gas. Both are a real answer, it depends on the house and how you live in it.
When should I book a fire install?
Earlier than you think. Everyone books fires in April and May, and consents take as long as they take. Booking in late summer means the fire is in before the weather turns.
Can you replace an existing fire?
Yes, and a replacement is often simpler than a first install because the hearth and the flue penetration already exist. It still needs consent, and the new appliance still has to meet the current rules.
