When the hot water goes
A cylinder rarely fails politely. It either stops heating, or it starts leaking into a cupboard, a ceiling or a hallway. Either way the first job is working out whether you are looking at a repair or a replacement, because the difference is a few hundred dollars against a few thousand.
Elements, thermostats and valves all fail long before the cylinder does, and they are all replaceable. We check those first. If the cylinder itself has corroded through there is no fixing it, and we will say that plainly rather than selling you a repair that buys a month.
Choosing the replacement
Electric
Still the most common cylinder in Napier houses and the simplest to replace. Sizing is the thing that matters: a 135 litre cylinder in a house of five is a fight over the shower every morning, and an oversized one costs you every day in standing losses.
Gas
Continuous flow gas gives you hot water that does not run out, and it frees up the cupboard the old cylinder lived in. It needs a gas supply, whether that is reticulated natural gas or bottles, and it needs a licensed gasfitter, which we have in house.
Heat pump
A heat pump cylinder pulls heat out of the air the same way a heat pump heats a room, and uses a fraction of the electricity of a straight element. They cost more to buy, need outdoor space and airflow, and are not silent. In the right house they pay for themselves. In the wrong one they are an expensive way to make the same hot water.
New builds
On a new house the cylinder goes in at the right stage, sized and located to suit the plan rather than squeezed in at the end. We work in with builders across Hawke's Bay and can take the hot water, the gas and the drainage on the same job.

Common questions
How long does a cylinder replacement take?
A straight swap of a like for like cylinder is usually a day. Changing type, for example electric to heat pump, or moving the cylinder, takes longer because the pipework, the wiring and sometimes the space all change.
Which brands do you install?
Rheem, Rinnai, Haier and Ecospring. We are agents for Ecospring. We will tell you which suits the house rather than which we happen to have.
Is a heat pump cylinder worth it?
For some houses, yes. They use a fraction of the power of an electric element, but they cost more up front, need outside space and airflow, and make some noise. If you have a small household or nowhere sensible to put one, a good electric or gas cylinder is often the better answer.
My hot water has gone cold. Is the cylinder dead?
Not necessarily. An element or thermostat is a much cheaper fix than a cylinder, and on gas it is often the unit rather than the storage. It is worth having someone look before you commit to a replacement.
Do you fix leaking cylinders?
We will always look. If the leak is at a fitting or a valve it is a repair. If the cylinder itself has gone, it needs replacing, and we will tell you which it is honestly.
